Leeds Beckett University sees new building given go ahead
As a Leeds based construction business, we are pleased to hear that Leeds Beckett University has been given the green light on a new £75m creative arts building on the edge of the city’s Civic Quarter.
The building has been designed by Hawkins Brown and it is hoped the new building will play an integral part in the bid for Leeds becoming the European Capital of Culture in 2023.
The building itself will be incredibly spectacular with it spanning eight stories and will be used by many different creative arts students. There will be a deep basement performance and studio space to house facilities for the departments of Music, The Northern Film School, Performing Arts and Fashion. Furthermore, the design also includes an atrium that rises up to the fifth floor. To enhance the new digital learning age, there is also animated social learning spaces, writing sheds and conversation dens. The lower floors of the building will also house the theatre, triple height TV studio and a cinema.
Work on the project is expected to begin before the end of the year and Leeds Beckett University are hoping that students will be able to use the facility as soon as possible.
The new building forms a major part of the University’s £200m campus development plan, which will be delivered over the next five years.
The investment that Leeds Beckett University is putting in to new buildings is great news for businesses like ourselves who have worked with construction firms on this scale before. Furthermore, it is great for the area of Leeds and will see more students come to the area, helping the city progress.
