A north Leeds quarry that played a part in propelling actor Jim Sturgess to Hollywood stardom has rung in the changes!

The Mone Bros-owned Blackhill Quarry in Bramhope has featured as a backdrop for Emmerdale and Heartbeat as well as the 2003 ‘Close Encounters’ episodes of ITV detective drama ‘Touch of Frost’ which included a young Sturgess playing the part of an autistic teenager alongside David Jason.

Sturgess has since gone on to star in a number of major Hollywood productions including Cloud Atlas, The Other Boleyn Girl and Crossing Over with the likes of Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks, Ed Harris, Halle Berry and Colin Farrell to name but a few.

The static stone crusher, pan mill and long conveyor that David Jason and Jim Sturgess walked up in the dramatic, final sequences, have recently been dismantled after over 40 years of order to make way for more modern and faster mobile screening and recycling machinery in the form of a Kleeman MC 110Z EVO crusher and Mockeln 5200 screen.

Mone Bros Director Kevin Mone commented: “It’s a new chapter for Blackhill Quarry with the iconic pan mill and crusher no more. The distinctive buildings played a key role in the TV drama which introduced Sturgess to our screens.”
